Personal- Heart Surgery Part 1

October 14, 2016 in Health, Healthcare

20160413_153826

I’m mentally and physically preparing for heart surgery and I’m scared AF! No, it won’t be open-heart surgery in fact it is a new and far more advanced technique called Cardiac Ablasion. Let’s allow a proper medical site to explain it “Cardiac ablation is a procedure that can correct heart rhythm problems (arrhythmias). Ablation usually uses long, flexible tubes (catheters) inserted through a vein in your groin and threaded to your heart to correct structural problems in your heart that cause an arrhythmia.”

Still pretty scary right? Essentially they are going to laser a part of my heart away and hopefully that will sort out one of the more major problems. You see I have a Wandering Pacemaker which is when my natural pacemaker causes arrhythmia. It was diagnosed when I landed up in ER at 18 with an unnaturally high heart rate which started to affect my day-to-day activities. I wasn’t sporty by any means but I was suddenly out of breath after climbing a single flight of stairs. I also wasn’t overweight (was 48kg at the time) which is often seen with high resting heart rates. Even when I was sleeping my resting heart rate was well over 120bpm. It also “jumped” around a lot.

After the doctors ruled out the usual suspects: drugs/medication/anxiety/overreacting they realised wait there is an actual problem here and after seeing my 400 “incorrect beats” in an ECG the doctor immediately put me on medication to slow my heart rate down. Which I’ve been on ever since.

They also discovered a Mitral Valve Prolapse but that can be fixed later in my life as it doesn’t cause me too many problems aside from when I feel the blood “pool up” in a chamber and a bit of pressure from that.

I went from never caring about my heart unless a boy broke it to suddenly my world revolving around trips to the cardiologist, seeing every part of my heart close up on sonars and in scans. Knowing exactly what chamber has what problem and being aware of if it was going into fibrillation or not. The medication was a total life saver and now my heart rate rests around 70-85 no matter how fit I get or unfit I am.

It also comes with many side effects and tiredness is not something you wish to experience when you’re a young adult. The constant gnawing tiredness affects me the most but the medication can also increase cholesterol and deplete your body of nutrients etc. It’s chronic medication and not something I want to be on for the rest of my life. Also one cannot fall pregnant on it. It can massively affect fetal growth and it can also cause the fetus to be rejected by the body and therefore cause a miscarriage. I’m definitely not looking at having a child anytime soon but I do possibly want to in the future so this too has been a big motivation for going through with the surgery.

The first step is to go off my medication for two weeks. The surgeon needs to pinpoint exactly where the problem is so that he can laser only that part away. I need to be brave and not take something which I’ve taken every single day for 2920 days like clockwork. I have no idea what to expect or how I’ll feel. I will have an ICU nurse on call 24/7 who will talk me through what is normal for me and what may be an emergency but this process is actually more daunting than the actual procedure itself. So starting from tomorrow I’ll be going off it so wish me good luck!

I suspect we are on the same medication 🙁 I’ve only ever been off of it for 2 days since starting my cocktail 4 years ago, and you become so conscious of anything happening in your chest! Will keep you in my prayers, but I’m sure you are in great hands 🙂

I’m so sorry to hear that you’ve been going through this! I always feel so sorry for people who have to live with horrid diseases and conditions when they’re still so young. Good luck with going off the meds and with the operation, I am sure that everything will be fine and that you’ll have a new lease on life.

WOW!!! I knew that if a place is using @frysfamily WOW!!! I knew that if a place is using @frysfamily products then the results would be good. What I did not expect was arguably the best sushi I have ever had! @johndoryssa you have outdone yourself with this vegan “prawn style” sushi platter. I got it as a takeaway as you can see but I’ll certainly be back very soon for another platter. Now I’m really keen to try the “prawn style” tacos too.

*And yes the Mayo etc is all 100% vegan and so is the “roe”. All plant-based deliciousness💕💕💕

I’m definitely bombarding Instagram today but as I’m definitely bombarding Instagram today but as I mentioned in my previous post, it was my mother’s 70th. The birthday turned into an entire week of celebrations. As I wasn’t sure when I’d be able to see her again, with the ever-changing lockdown levels.

It’s been fun with surprises arriving almost everyday for her. Aside from this gorgeous #Vegan birthday cake from @emmasvegancakes, nothing else was actually a part of the original birthday plans! We were meant to be all on a safari and my sister (from the UK) was meant to be here.

However, we made it as memorable as we could!! Also, the main thing that makes a birthday, a birthday, is birthday cake right??!

Who still thinks that vegan food is just “vegetables” or has to be boring. Going plant-based doesn’t mean missing out on any treats.

This gorgeous & delicious vanilla cake was amazing. It actually reminded us of my granny’s famous family cake. She passed away at 94 and if I recall correctly she was still regularly whipping up those cakes until 90! Although those definitely weren’t vegan.

Be sure to check out @emmasvegancakes professional 100% vegan cake and cupcakes. #supportsmallbusinesses

She is also my best friend. Someone I can talk to about everything and anything, our family truly has no filters!

This year it was even more special just by being able to celebrate with her. Which is why simply spending time with her turned her birthday into a week long celebration! It started on Friday! Mostly due to the fact that being able to spend time this together and physically see her was the biggest blessing. With everything going on in the world right now, to be able to both be healthy and together is all we could of asked for.

To even think of what my sister, who couldn’t fly down from the UK, rest of the family and I had planned for her. Even for all of us from December until now. It all seems so surreal... The world has truly changed. I wish my sister could of been here with us, but she was in a sense as with such a massive birthday bouquet I wouldn’t of been surprised if she was hidden in there!

This summer heat is definitely making the days fee This summer heat is definitely making the days feel far longer. Also, since doing both #Veganuary2021 and the @RushTush Vegan Glow Cleanse, prepping food in advance has become a part of my routine. No more rushing to make quickly make something or quickly ordering a takeaway. This means healthier and more filling meals. So usually at this time it’s simply snack time. Fresh pineapple is a favourite. I sometimes even ice mine!

Oh just casually forcing my fur kids to love me!!! Oh just casually forcing my fur kids to love me!!!

Just kidding, they usually the ones begging for love. @candi_onewoofatatime sleeps on my feet as in on. To trap me or on my actual head. @oneroccoatatime also tries to do the “on mummy’s head” move even though he weighs 32kg. Or he sleeps alongside us like a real big boy that snores. They the most amazing little souls and have helped me through so many tough mental health times.

Yes, we allow our dogs on the bed. They are actually cleaner than most humans 💕

Should have of course posted these last night but Should have of course posted these last night but hey the evening was SO crazy!! Haha actually it was a total bust. Arguing over midnight music, weird tasting cocktails and hangry as my pizzas were taking too long. But we were together and alive so I guess that’s a plus. Tried to create a “holiday” vibe with whatever I could find around the house.
